Goji berry and diabetes

Diabetes Melitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by a high blood sugar level. Symptoms include increased thirst and hunger, frequent urination. Serious complications include cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and damage to the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy is a serious side effect of diabetes, leading to blindness.

Goji berries have been used for the treatment of health problems like diabetes and cancer. They are rich in vitamins A, E, C, B1, B2, B6, amino acids, flavonoids, polysaccharides, zinc, iron, and selenium. They also contain chromium, a mineral that appears to help reduce insulin resistance. Studies have shown that goji berries are effective in aging, increased metabolism, immune system and glycemic control.

Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) was found as hypoglycemic substance (the substance that decrease your blood sugar levels). According to the studies, the use of polysaccharides found in goji berries reduced triglycerides levels.

Diabetic retinopathy is characterized by a high levels of glucose in the eyes leading to blindness. Goji berries have protective effect on the eyes. They are rich in taurine. Taurine can protect the retina because of its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. It is essential for cardiovascular function.

Be aware that antidiabetes drugs interacts with Goji berry!

The dose of diabetes medication might need to be changed, because taking together with goji berry can cause blood sugar to go too low.
